DR. GERTRUDE SAXINGER

Dr. Gertrude Saxinger is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna. Currently she is the coordinator of the IASSA Working Group on Gender in the Arctic and a member of the Austrian Polar Research Institute (APRI).

Gerti is interested in studies of the Arctic (Russia and Canada) as well as remote and sparsely populated regions. Her research focuses on environmental anthropology, extractive industries, mobility (specifically FIFO and the long-distance commuting system), infrastructure in remote regions, as well as gender and intersectionality.

DR. MICHAEL KARCHER

DR. MICHAEL KARCHER

Dr Michael Karcher is a director and research scientist at the science company Ocean Atmosphere Systems, and a senior researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). Among other things, Michael currently co-leads the Arctic PASSION project which aims to co-create and implement an Arctic observing system that is tuned to address the urgent needs of those who live in the Arctic and has relevance to global society.

He is a trained physical oceanographer, and his research interests focus on understanding the dynamics of the coupled ice-ocean-atmosphere system of the northern hemisphere.

DR. RENUKA BADHE

DR. RENUKA BADHE

Dr. Renuka Badhe is the co-founder of Women in Polar Science (WiPS). Currently she also serves as the Executive Secretary of the European Polar Board, and is based in the Netherlands. Her background is in economics and public policy, and she holds a PhD on southern ocean phytoplankton physiology. Renuka has worked with a range international organisations on various aspects of polar science, policy and/or strategy development. Her current responsibilities include serving as a Chair of EU-PolarNet project’s External Expert Advisory Board, and service on many national and international committees.

Dr. Tahnee Prior a co-founder and co-lead of Women of the Arctic (WoA) & a Research Associate at Dalhousie University. Currently, she leads WoA’s research in the Horizon Europe-funded project ICEBERG & co-leads WoA's research in the Horizon 2020 project Arctic PASSION. Her research interests broadly include global environmental governance, international law, complex systems theory, Arctic and oceans governance, and the gender-environment nexus.

Dr. Malgorzata (Gosia) Smieszek is a co-founder and co-lead of Women of the Arctic (WoA). She is also a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway & Adjunct Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Her research focuses on Arctic & international environmental governance, science-policy interface and Arctic scientific cooperation, & gender-environment nexus.
